SF Watercolor Postcards

Reflections

I began this project at the beginning of March 2020 and completed the series over the course of three months. The paintings reference photographs I took sporadically from 2017 - 2020.

I’ve always enjoyed sending postcards and felt compelled to put my own spin on creating a set of them. To me, postcards serve to illuminate the beauty of a specific location and to represent its distinct qualities.

Each painting recalls a specific memory when I took a pause in my day to stop and take note of my surroundings. Walking to a cafe and noticing vivid red flowers on a tree matching the red sides of a building at the intersection of Page & Central. Taking a stroll and spotting a Matilija poppy with its bright yellow center and soft white petals blowing in the wind. Looking up after a day spent at the office and finding the moon had risen just above a tall building, shining against a cobalt blue sky.

I wanted to capture how seemingly mundane and everyday moments transform and become something quite special when we choose to pay attention.
